The Tunnel Historical Movie – The Last Voyage

Before it became the unique shooting range used today, the Barry Island Tunnel was part of a much larger industrial and transport network. That network helped shape the town of Barry and its surrounding landscape.

This tunnel once carried trains beneath residential streets, linking the bustling Barry Docks with the wider railway system. It formed part of a vital route. Trains used it to transport goods—and especially coal—from the South Wales Valleys to ships waiting at the docks.

Today, the tunnel stretches to around 280 yards in length. Its entrance sits near Barry Island railway station, and its far end emerges close to the yacht club. While now repurposed, its origins lie firmly in the age of heavy industry and rapid expansion.


Barry Before the Docks

Before the late 19th century, Barry was little more than a quiet coastal settlement of farms and small cottages. That changed dramatically during the Industrial Revolution, when South Wales became one of the world’s most important coal-producing regions.

At the time, nearby Cardiff handled most coal exports—but increasing demand led to congestion, high costs, and delays. Industrialists began searching for alternatives, and Barry—with its natural harbour known as Barry Sound—offered the perfect opportunity.

The entrance is next to the Barry Island station. The back side is adjacent to the Barry Yacht Club, and is blocked off. The movie below covers the voyage from The Docks, through The Tunnel, all the way to Sully Station. It captures the last train voyage through The Tunnel, on 11 October 1971.

Building the Docks and Railway

The transformation began in the 1880s. Entrepreneur David Davies and his partners set out to build a new dock and railway system. Construction officially started in 1884, and by 1889 Barry Docks opened as a major coal-exporting port.

The scale of engineering was extraordinary:

  • Barry Island was physically connected to the mainland by damming the tidal channel
  • The seabed was drained and excavated to create vast dock basins
  • Workers laid railways directly into the docks so coal wagons could be unloaded straight onto ships

Within just a few years, the docks became a powerhouse of global trade. By 1913, Barry was the largest coal-exporting port in the world, shipping over 11 million tons annually.

The port employed thousands of workers, and the town rapidly expanded to support this booming industry.

To support the movement of coal and goods, workers built an extensive railway network alongside the docks. The Barry Railway connected mines in the valleys directly to the port, dramatically improving efficiency.

The Barry Island Tunnel was one piece of this system. It allowed trains to pass through built-up areas and reach key points along the docks and coastline without disruption.

Lines ran through tunnels, across breakwaters, and alongside dock basins. Together, they formed a dense industrial landscape where rail and sea transport worked seamlessly.


Peak, Decline, and Closure

Barry’s success continued into the early 20th century, but global events gradually changed its fortunes.

  • After World War I, coal demand declined
  • The Great Depression further reduced exports
  • Industrial shifts and competition weakened the port’s dominance

Despite a resurgence during World War II, when the docks again played a strategic role, the long-term trend was decline.

Railway usage reduced, and many lines—including those through the tunnel—eventually closed. The final train journey through the Barry Island Tunnel took place on 11 October 1971, marking the end of its operational life.


From Industry to Heritage

Following closure, parts of Barry’s industrial infrastructure were abandoned, repurposed, or preserved. The tunnel itself avoided demolition and found a new life—eventually becoming the shooting range used today.

What was once a vital artery of the Industrial Revolution is now a rare surviving example of Victorian railway engineering. It sits hidden beneath modern Barry but still echoes its industrial past.

More than just a railway film, it represents the closing chapter of an era. That era transformed Barry from a quiet coastal village into one of the most important industrial ports in the world.
