Firearms in the UK – The truth about UK Guns

This video covers a wide variety of UK gun laws, including what is and isn’t restricted. It explains how the conditions of use, whether at a range or on private land, affect what you are allowed or licensed to shoot.

Understanding the Two Main Licence Types

In the UK, most rifle shooters hold one of two certificates. A Firearms Certificate (FAC) covers rifles like the ones used at Phoenix Rifle Club, and it lists each specific firearm and calibre you are licensed to own. A Shotgun Certificate (SGC) covers shotguns instead, and works differently since it does not list individual guns.

Both certificates are issued by your local police force, and the process includes background checks, a home visit, and character references. Once approved, your certificate specifies exactly which conditions you must meet for storage and use.

Why This Matters for New Shooters

Knowing the difference between these certificates, and what each allows, helps you choose the right sport and equipment from the start. If you are considering target shooting, our club can talk you through the licensing process and what it involves.
